Painting Questions, Answered Honestly

Hiring a painting company involves a lot of unknowns if you've never done it before — how long it takes, what it costs, what's actually included in a quote, what kind of paint you should use, what happens if it rains, who's responsible for moving furniture, and so on. We've put together this FAQ to give you straight, useful answers to the questions clients ask us most often. If yours isn't here, please contact us — we're happy to answer questions before you commit to anything.

We take on residential and commercial projects of every size — from single rooms in a small flat to full repaints of multi-storey houses, townhouse complexes, body corporates, office blocks, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, medical practices, warehouses and industrial buildings. We also handle specialised work like roof painting, waterproofing, damp repair, plastering, varnishing, steel painting and decorative finishes. There's almost no painting-related project too big or too small — please get in touch with the details of yours.
Pricing depends on quite a few factors: the size of the property, the condition of the surfaces (how much prep is needed), the paint product specified, the number of coats required, the height and access (single-storey vs multi-storey), any specialised work needed (waterproofing, roof, decorative finishes) and the location of the property. Because of all of these variables, the only way to give you a meaningful price is to come and see the property in person. Our site visits and quotes are free and there's no obligation — just request one through our contact form.
Timelines depend on size and scope. A single room with light prep can be one to two days. A full three-bedroom interior typically runs between three and six working days. A full exterior repaint on a standard family home is usually four to ten working days depending on condition and access. Townhouse complexes, body corporates and larger commercial sites take longer and are quoted with a clear project schedule. We give you a realistic written timeline at the quote stage and stick to it — if anything could shift the dates (for example weather on an exterior job), we'll let you know as soon as we know.
Preparation is always included in our quotes and is one of the most important parts of the job. This covers washing or pressure-cleaning surfaces, scraping off loose paint, filling cracks and holes, sanding rough or glossy areas, applying stain block where needed, priming bare patches, treating any obvious damp issues, masking trim, covering floors and furniture and removing dust. We don't quote you a low number for paint and then surprise you with extras for prep — the quote is what you pay.
We work mainly with the well-known South African paint manufacturers — Plascon, Dulux, Prominent and similar — and choose the specific product line based on the surface, the room or area, and the conditions. Bathrooms and kitchens get mould-resistant washable paint. High-traffic interior areas get hard-wearing washable acrylics. Exterior walls get UV-stable, water-resistant systems. Roofs get specialised flexible roof coatings with the right primer. Coastal homes get salt-resistant formulations. The right product matters far more than the brand name on the tin.
Yes — colour consultation is part of what we do. We'll talk through the look you want, look at the natural light in each room, consider your existing flooring and furniture, and recommend palettes that work together. We can bring out paint fan decks and even paint small test patches on the actual wall so you can see how the colour reads against your light before we commit to a tin. There's no extra charge for this.
Heavy items can stay in place — we move them carefully to the centre of the room, cover them properly with drop sheets, and slide them back at the end. We'd ask you to take down anything fragile, anything valuable, framed art and family photos, and to clear off shelves before we start. Small items, ornaments, electronics and so on are also better packed away. If you'd like us to do all the moving for you, that can be arranged as part of the quote.
Painting in rain or on wet surfaces is one of the fastest ways to ruin an exterior paint job. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we won't paint — we'll pause the project and resume as soon as conditions are right. We communicate proactively about this so you're never wondering where the team is. On longer outdoor projects we schedule buffer days into the plan specifically to absorb weather delays without blowing out the overall timeline.
Absolutely. For commercial properties we routinely work after hours, overnight, on weekends, and in phased sections so your business never has to close. For homes we work around your daily routine — kids going to school, dogs going outside, you working from home, family meals in the kitchen. Just tell us what your day looks like during the site visit and we'll plan the project around it.
Yes. We back our workmanship and stand behind the finish we deliver. If anything within the work we've done shows up as a defect that's down to our workmanship within a reasonable period after completion, we come back and put it right at no charge. Specific guarantee terms are explained at the quote stage based on the system used — UV-stable exterior systems and roof coatings, for example, come with their own manufacturer warranties as well.
Yes, we carry public liability cover and our team is insured while on site. We're happy to share certificates with body corporates, facilities managers or commercial clients on request. For homeowners, this means peace of mind that if anything were to go wrong, you're not exposed.
Across Gauteng we cover Johannesburg, Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand, Randburg, Fourways, Roodepoort, Soweto, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Bedfordview, Germiston, Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Springs, Nigel, Pretoria, Centurion, Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Carletonville and surrounding suburbs. If your suburb isn't listed, please ask — we likely still cover it.
Across the Western Cape we cover Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West, Durbanville, Milnerton, Kraaifontein, Goodwood, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Parow, Table View, Sea Point, Claremont, Rondebosch and surrounding suburbs. As above, please ask if your area isn't listed — coverage extends further than this list suggests.
Yes — waterproofing and damp repair are a major part of what we do. We diagnose the cause of the damp first (because painting over an active leak just hides it temporarily), then apply the appropriate solution: torch-on membrane for flat roofs and balconies, acrylic waterproof coatings for parapets and exterior walls, rising damp injection for ground-floor damp, or full strip-and-reseal for severely affected areas. We then restore the paint finish on top. See our Services page for more detail.
Yes. We do full roof coating and sealing on concrete tile, clay tile, slate, IBR sheeting and corrugated zinc roofs. Our process includes pressure cleaning, repairing damaged or lifted sections, applying the right primer for the substrate, and finishing with two coats of UV-stable, flexible roof coating in your colour of choice. A properly done roof repaint can also extend the life of the roof itself by several years.
We coat steel structures, gates, palisades, balustrades, guard houses, carports and industrial pipework using rust-inhibiting primers and high-performance topcoats. Existing rust is mechanically removed before any new coating goes on — there's no point putting fresh paint on top of corrosion that will keep spreading underneath.
Yes. We work on new builds, renovations, additions and full property makeovers. On new builds we handle the full system on fresh plaster — bonding liquid, sealer, primer and two top coats. On renovations we coordinate with other trades (builders, electricians, tilers, plumbers) so painting happens at the right point in the build and the finish is properly protected when handed over.
For smaller residential projects we can often start within one to two weeks of accepting the quote, sometimes sooner. Larger projects and commercial work need a little more planning. If you have a specific deadline — guests arriving, property going to market, business launch, end-of-lease — tell us when you contact us and we'll do everything we can to work to it.
For most residential projects we ask for a partial deposit on acceptance — typically to cover paint and materials — with the balance payable on completion to your satisfaction. For larger commercial projects we work on staged payments tied to project milestones. All terms are clearly laid out in writing in the quote, with no hidden conditions.
